Heathrow’s Ultra Global PRT

December 18, 2011 by staff

Heathrow’s Ultra Global PRT, ULTra Fairwood, an India-based engineering company, announced the upcoming plan of setting up a pod-car system for Amritsar (India). The engineering company confirmed that it had reached an agreement with the Punjab government for constructing a rapid transit system in this city of Punjab. ULTra Global PRT recently completed a proof-of-concept at Heathrow Airport in London and will be introducing the same system of pod-car technology in India too.

Fraser Brown, managing director of ULTra Global PRT, confirmed that this system will consist of 200 automated electric pods and will be used by 1,00,000 passengers per day for commuting over 3.3 kilometers. On the seven-station route, key stations will be the principal bus station, the railroad terminal and Golden Temple. Moreover, the shuttle service will charge a comparable fare to other public transport mediums applicable in the city.

In order to commence service by 2014, work on the project will begin in 2012 itself. Owing to the difference in climatic conditions of London and Amritsar, the company will have to make many alterations and revisions to the pod cars system to suit the country. ULTra Fairwood’s private investment in the project allows them to build and operate it under a 30-year agreement. However, the engineering company has not disclosed projected costs for building and running the project.

ULTra Fairwood is licensing the pod-car technology to transform city’s streetscape and skyline from ULTra Global PRT in a franchise-style agreement. The British company will be receiving payment in the tune of $ 3.1 million over the next two years for its consulting services. Moreover, ULTra Global will also be receiving an amount of £5.4 million for a share of the fares it collects in its 30 year long operations. This new development will completely change the way people commute in the city and de-congest roads considerably.
