Happy Diwali, In New Delhi two days before Diwali, imprisoned Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament Kanimozhi looking to spend the festival of lights in Tihar jail, like 16 other defendants in the case of 2G scam.

The indictment by the Central Bureau (CBI) Special Court of Inquiry, on Saturday opened the way for applications to pass bail to all defendants.

Indictment was a pre-set by the Supreme Court to release the 2G scam accused on bail, however, the leaders of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) admit that there is very little room for Kani out of jail before Diwali.

Request Kanimozhi bail application along with Unitech Sanjay Chandra is all set to take on Monday. “But we have only two working days, we’re not quite sure if we can get bail, and to complete the process in such a short time,” said TKS Elangovan DMK leader.

As for the charges slapped, – (criminal violation of the confidence of the public servant and punishment of criminal conspiracy – the DMK leadership is not overly concerned about the nature of the charges.

“We’re not worried about what the CBI has given birth to now. They have deliberately made solemn and sounding just to prove a point. It is not enough to beat the charges, the CBI will have to make all charges clear when the case goes to trial, “Elangovan said.

The maximum penalty he could face Kanimozhi, if found guilty of criminal violation of trust, is the end of life, while the minimum sentence is seven years in prison.

Karuna meets sonia

Meanwhile, with the hope of his daughter, softening, the father of Kanimozhi, Karunanidhi decided to come calling in Delhi.

His first stop was Congress President Sonia Gandhi, whom I met for the first time since the arrest of his daughter in May. While Karuna has visited twice before in prison, he was also upset Congress, which did not bother to call Gandhi.

The Karuna-Sonia meeting now indicates that the DMK patriarch is in a forgiving mood and ready for concrete ties with Congress.

The two sides had fought to the last local body polls in Tamil Nadu separately and beaten up. That is perhaps why the renewal of vows between them.

Raja, kani, 15 other defendants for trial

Former telecom minister A Raja Union, Rajya Sabha member Kanimozhi is DMK and 15 others, including major corporate honchos will be brought to trial in the fraud of several million rupees 2G spectrum.

A Delhi High Court on Saturday charged with several charges including criminal conspiracy, breach of trust, fraud and forgery.

All the accused have been charged under Article 409 of the Penal Code of India for alleged criminal violation of the confidence that attracts a maximum sentence of life term. The other charges attract several terms in prison.

Central Bureau of Investigation Special Judge OP Saini has been set for November 11 to begin the trial, after all the accused refused to plead guilty to various crimes.

Raja and Kanimozhi addition, the court framed charges against company executives managing director of Reliance Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group Gautam Doshi, Surendra Pipara, Group President and Hari Nair, senior vice president, Swan Telecom promoter Shahid Usman Balwas, his cousin Asif Balwas, Rajeev Agarwal colleague, managing director Sanjay Chandra of Unitech Limited and CEO of DB Realty Vinod Goenka.
