Graham Brown Dies

Graham Brown Dies, Actor Graham Brown, known for his role as a school principal on the TV series, Sanford & Son, died Tuesday at age 87.  Born Robert Brown, he also acted on stage at London’s Globe Theater.  Actress and co-star Barbara Montgomery revealed that he died of pulmonary failure at the Lillian Booth Actors’ Fund Nursing Home in Englewood, N.J. Montgomery had power of attorney on Brown’s behalf. She called him meticulous and a gentleman.

Brown’s other roles include the movies The Muppets Take Manhattan (1984) and Malcolm X (1992). He often played educated professionals such as doctors and clergymen.

He regularly appeared in stage productions of the New York-based Negro Ensemble Company and was a founding member of the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis.

Born in New York, Brown won the Los Angeles Critics Circle Award for his role as Jared Philibert, the 50-year-old patriarch of a Caribbean-American family confined to an iron lung in the play, Nevis Mountain Dew. He originated the role in NEC’s Off-Broadway production and reprised the role in the West Coast premiere of the play.
