“We are in shock,” said Joyce Divine, president of the College of Arts and Sciences Student Council. “It was something we did not expect. At the same time, we are mourning the loss of someone who had a very bright future, but he was not given the opportunity to have that.”

Despite the murder of one of her students, an official of the University of the Philippines Los Ba? Os (UPLB) believes that the campus remains safe.

Dr. Virginia Cardenas, UPLB Vice Chancellor for Community Affairs, says that the killing of allure, a team of 3 rd year students of Science, was an isolated incident.

“Here in the UP campus, tahimik dito naman,” she said. “It’s a safe place. The incident occurred outside the school, beyond our control. It was very unfortunate.”

Divine is in accordance with Cardenas.

“I live inside the campus, and still somehow safe. They still have security at night,” he said.

But, he adds, “We can never be 100% sure it is safe.”

Suspects in custody

Allure was kidnapped on her way to her bedroom and was assaulted and murdered. His body was found in a canal near the Institute of Plant Breeding of the road early Tuesday.

The suspects, a tricycle driver and a security guard and police custody.

Cardenas says UPLB remains a good place to learn and study.

“I do not think that this isolated incident that affects the image of the university,” he said.

But it is also asking UPLB students and the community to be “more security conscious.”

Cardenas says the university meets the barangay officials from around the UPLB campus in order to help strengthen security.

However, TJ Montserrat, a professor of Computer Science, believes the UPLB campus is not as safe as it once was.

“Hindi na alam kung Natin but mabuti hindi yung or” he said, adding that he has instructed his students to walk in groups.
