January 13, 2012 by staff
Kathleen, who turned 9 in November, died at about 10 p.m. after suffering from Huntington’s disease for more than five years.
The degenerative brain disorder also claimed the lives of her mother, Laura, and her grandfather.
Kathleen’s grandmother, Rebecca Rose, said via Facebook:
“Two and a half years ago I (laid) in bed with my beautiful daughter Laura as she took her last breath of life … last night I (laid) in bed with her beautiful daughter as she took her last breath. My daughter has her baby back. I love you Kathleen with all my heart, I miss you! She was an angel here on earth and now in heaven … RIP Bones.”
‘Bones’ was a nickname family and friends used for Kathleen.
In October 2010, neighbor Jennifer Petkov posted pictures on Facebook of Kathleen with a skull and crossbones and her deceased mother being hugged by the Grim Reaper.
There was a national outpouring of support for Kathleen. Rose told The News-Herald Newspapers that they received a large amount of support, and hope that awareness was raised about the disease.
