Giffords & Tucson Return, U.S. Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords has made an emotional return to her hometown for the first time since he was shot there for five months. The weekend trip marks a new milestone for Arizona politician, who was near death when he was shot through the brain at close range in January. The shooting at a campaign rallies in Tucson left six people dead and wounding 12 others.
Three days later he was discharged from a rehabilitation unit at Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston, Texas, Ms. Giffords flew to Tucson on a private jet with her husband, astronaut and U.S. Navy Captain Mark Kelly, a long-awaited return. Planned to spend Father’s Day with their parents.
“We’ve been dreaming of this trip for some time,” said Capt.Kelly. “Gabby Tucson loses a lot and their doctors have said that returning to her hometown, could play an important role in recovery. Is sure to be very emotional.”
Ms Giffords, 41, has made what her doctors described as a “miraculous” recovery from injuries inflicted when attacking Jared Loughner, 22, opened fire on the Congressman held a public meeting and greeting session outside a supermarket in Tucson. A bullet passed clean through the left side of her brain, depriving her of the ability to walk and talk and necessitating the removal of half of her skull as surgeons fought to save her Tucson life.
He was flown to Houston in critical condition on January 21 and began intensive rehabilitation therapy five days later. In five months, has helped him regain mobility and cognitive skills, and to partially restore their power of expression, although they can speak only in short sentences at a time – including “Stranger to Tucson” – and is based on facial expressions and hand gestures to supplement communications.
Capt.Kelly, 48, caring for his wife to balance training for the last mission of space shuttle Endeavour in May. Ms Giffords traveled to Cape Canaveral, Florida for launch, but has otherwise been largely confined to a hospital.
“For five long months, Gabby has been living and working in the rehabilitation center in Houston. Now that is an outpatient, your first priority is to get home and the place is a source of strength for her,” said the captain. Kelly, who returned from his space mission on 1 June. During his mission, he chose a song from a band of Tucson as music ‘clock’ of tomorrow, played in the radio-to-air mission control, dedicating it to his wife and explained while in orbit: “I I know really, really want to go back there … It’s an appropriate song, since it is very soon. ”
He asked the privacy of your visit yesterday and did not disclose whether they will return to the scene of the shooting. A Capt.Kelly’s two daughters accompany the couple from his first marriage.
Ms Giffords was born and raised in Tucson and before her shot would be the weekend escape there from Washington, where possible. Aides said that she has remembered her hometown during her rehabilitation and fantasy back, but for now will live with her husband in Houston continues to recover.
“Wheels of Tucson”, her team announced in her Twitter account that her plane landed in her hometown last night. “Gabrielle and Mark waiting for a beautiful weekend.”
