George StroumboulopoulosGeorge Stroumboulopoulos, CBC host George Stroumboulopoulos, Global newscaster Dawna Friesen and Kelley CBC News Network, Mark was among the big winners at a gala celebrating the industry the best in news, sports, documentaries, reality and lifestyle television.

Gemini Awards presented trophies for excellence in Canadian television at a private party in Toronto organized by comedians Steve Patterson.

The celebration capped Stroumboulopoulos late night talk show, “George Stroumboulopoulos Tonight” best series to talk, Friesen best news anchor and best host or interviewer Kelley in a news program “Connect with Mark Kelley.”

The party also called Global BC “News Hour” best local news program in a large market and “CBC News: Saskatchewan” best local newscast in a small market.

The Gemini gala for children and Youth Theater, and the winners of the variety and comedy will take place on Wednesday, while television gala September 7 presented trophies for the best dramas and comedies.

Giant Comic Russell Peters will host the CBC broadcast, where police CTV series “Flashpoint” takes the drama contenders with 17 nominations and HBO Canada, “Call Me Fitz” brings the sitcoms with 16 nominations.

At the gala on Tuesday, the head of CBC news anchor Peter Mansbridge gave Gordon Sinclair Award for broadcast journalism veteran journalist Lloyd Robertson, who leaves “CTV National News” on 1 September.

Other winners included Tuesday:

- Slice ‘Til Debt Do Us Part “, the award for best lifestyle series;

- Jay Onrait TSN is “sports,” the award for best sports commentator;

- Jim Bannon, named best sportsanlyst for his work on CBC’s “2010 Queen Plate”;

- “HNIC on CBC – Heritage Classic,” named best live sporting event;

- “CBC News: market,” as the best series of news information;

- “CBC News: The Governor General of New,” the award for best news coverage of special events.

In June 2006, CTV News announced it would participate in the Gemini Awards, saying the time involved in preparing entries for the prizes was not worth it.
