Giffords has been working with the therapist for several months at TIRR Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston, where he re-learn to walk and talk after he was shot in the head in a mass shooting in the parking lot of a Safeway store near Tucson on 8 January.

Mark Kimble, a spokesman for Giffords ‘Tucson office, confirmed the trip on Sunday, but declined to say anything more about the therapist, the type of therapy, where treatment was carried out, or if Giffords’ husband, astronaut Mark Kelly, accompanied on the trip.

Earlier this week, The Arizona Republic reported that Giffords read aloud the final chapter of the audio edition of the memoirs which he wrote with her husband, allowing people for the first time to hear for themselves how they are recovering .

The congressman has spoken only with friends and family and appeared in public only a few times since the assassination attempt. Six people were killed and 12 people were injured in addition to Giffords.

Giffords will be in Asheville on November 4. Kimble says that the trip is strictly for rehabilitation, no public appearances and interviews. It has been planned for months.
