Fran DrescherFran Drescher, The real life story of Fran Drescher divorce to gay ex-husband Peter Marc Jacobson, is the inspiration for the new series of TV Land “happily divorced” and as Drescher tells ET she and her ex are co-creator “proof of life” that couples can actually remain “happily divorced.”

Drescher and Jacobson began their relationship as high school sweethearts, and during her 20 years with the couple collaborated on several projects, including “The Nanny.”

A year after their separation in 1999, Drescher was diagnosed with uterine cancer. Fran said the illness made him realize that although she and her husband divorced, the love they once shared was not confined to marriage. “My cancer survival was a kind of one of the silver linings, because when Peter said he had cancer, she began to mourn and then, all the anger vanished and all that remained was love. ”

She says that “love” felt like her ex-husband supported her through a difficult fight against cancer makes it much easier to work in the subsequent confession gay Jacobson. Drescher calls love “the overall message of the series.”

John Michael Higgins, who plays Fran’s husband, was intrigued by the unusual premise, which he described as “very fun to play.”

Rita Moreno plays Drescher’s mother on the show, and says the legendary winner of an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony and having both Peter and Fran together on the set “wonderful.” “It is a joy. She is the simple happiness.”
