Forever 21 is an American chain of clothing stores with branches in the United States, Canada, Ireland, Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, UAE, Jordan, Oman, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Thailand, China, South Korea, Japan, Puerto Rico, the Philippines, and fashion with the United Kingdom and accessories for young women and men.
South Korean Chang Won-Dong and his wife, Jin Sook, founded the chain, originally known as Fashion 21, in Los Angeles, California in 1984. The first store opened April 21, 1984. It was located at 5637 St. N. Figueroa in Highland Park neighborhood of Los Angeles. The store was only 900 square feet (84 m2). It is still in operation and has the original name of the chain. Trendy designs seen in South Korea have been sold and targeted the community of Los Angeles Korean-American. However, people from several ethnic groups have started to notice the designs of cutting edge fashion, and the shop has become increasingly popular. At the end of the first year, sales had increased from 35,000 to 700,000 and $. Mode 21 eventually expanded at the rate of one new store every six months and changed the name brand fashion Forever 21 to 21.
In 1989, Forever 21 opened its first store on 11 and located in a mall, shopping center Panorama, which is in Panorama City, CA. The first European store opened in Birmingham, United Kingdom, Friday, November 12, 2010. The second was opened in Ireland in Dublin Jervis Street Shopping Centre, Jervis Street, and November 13, 2010. A store will open at The Maquinista in Barcelona, Spain, in 2011. Two stores will open in Vienna, Austria, in 2011.
Forever 21 has received attention in the media for printing “John 3:16″ on the merits of their trademark yellow bags. A spokeswoman for Forever 21 headquarters in Los Angeles said the biblical quote is a “show of faith of the owners.” (A similar practice has been updated by the chain In-N-Out Burger, which prints citation “John 3:16″ on the merits of some of their cups.)
Forever 21 have recently been the subject of further controversy, resulting from an interactive display in Times Square in New York. It is alleged that the advertising agency of Forever 21, Nicholaus Goossen space150 and Director, copied a similar piece – created in 2009 – from London by Chris O’Shea interactive artist. These allegations led to lively discussions on the Vimeo page showing the work between Goossen and other users, including well-known members of the communities and interactive new media art. Both space150 Goossen and have since apologized publicly on Vimeo.
On August 9, 2010, a security guard in a store at 6801 Hollywood Blvd XXI assaulted and strangled a deaf man for nearly two minutes because he did not stop at the door when the alarms went off. A pedestrian has filmed the whole situation and uploaded the video on YouTube.
