Fires In New MexicoFires In New Mexico, Raging wildfires in New Mexico forced the evacuation of the famous nuclear laboratory at Los Alamos Monday, but officials insist that the radioactive material is secure.

The fires have burned as close as a mile from the government laboratory – the menacing buildings, power lines and gas, officials said.

“The emergency laboratory equipment have been sent through the lab to protect key installations and materials,” said spokesman Jeff Berger’s lab.

“The protected areas include all services and our hazardous and radioactive proton accelerator and supercomputing centers.”

About 100 non-essential personnel are cleared from the area around the laboratory, where the first atomic bomb was built.

Susana Martinez Governor toured the laboratory of emergency operations center Sunday night and ordered the state National Guard in the area.

“My government will do everything possible to provide support to local response teams of emergency,” he said.

Firefighters have been battling wildfires throughout the Southwest and Texas, with 41 large fires burning more than 1.4 million hectares.
