Fan Suing For £800m Over Ref Who Put Him In Hospital, A Colombian fan whose heart almost gave way during the World Cup is demanding a crazy amount of compensation., A Colombian fan is suing FIFA because of the referee who he claims cost his country World Cup glory.

And 74-year-old Aurelio Jimenez – who, you won’t be surprised to hear, is a retired lawyer – is demanding an incredible €1 billion compensation for the conduct of Spanish referee Carlos Velasco Carballo.

That’s right: the guardians of the beautiful game are on the hook for an £800 million bill if Jimenez’s law suit is successful.

The main basis for the barmy litigation is Jimenez’s claim for “moral damages” for Carballo’s alleged failure to punish repeated heavy tackles during the Brazil v Colombia quarter-final – a failure, he claims, which literally put him in hospital.

“I felt very bad, I was heartbroken, my cardiac rhythm was altered and my relatives took me to the emergency room at the hospital,” Jimenez told the BBC’s World Service.

“I was surrounded by my grandchildren who were crying a lot.”
