Famu Drum Major Dies, Florida A&M University officials have released a statement regarding the death of Marching 100 drum major Robert Champion.

FAMU President James Ammons said Champion’s death was a major loss for the university.

“We are deeply saddened by this loss,” he said. “Our hearts and our prayers go out to Mr. Champion’s family.”

Champion performed in the Florida Classic earlier that day. He was one of the six drum majors performing in the halftime show. Marching 100 director Julian White met with band members early Sunday morning to talk about Champion’s death.

“We are in shock,” White said. “He was a very fine drum major who was of excellent character and very trustworthy. I had not told him yet, but he was slated to be the head drum major next year.”??
