Ex-Weezer Bassist Mikey Welsh Dies, Former Weezer bassist Mikey Welsh, who also found success in his second career as an artist, died in a Chicago hotel room, police said Sunday. Chicago police spokeswoman Laura Kubiak of Wales said it was supposed to leave the Hotel Raffaello at 1 pm Saturday. When he did, the hotel staff went to his room, entered and found him unconscious and not breathing, Kubiak said.
The Office of the Cook County Medical Examiner said the autopsy results will be available Sunday afternoon. Kubiak said there is nothing to indicate a crime.
Welsh, 40, of Burlington, Vermont, made with Weezer 1998 to 2001, leaving after suffering a nervous breakdown, according to the website of the band. Eventually settled on a second career as a painter.
“I’m taking a break from the music,” MetroWest Daily News said in 2002. “I really feel the need to reinvent and move on, and I could not be happier painting. The music is still an important part of my life, but really have no desire to play in reality.”
Weezer has posted a message on his website, saying that the time in Wales with the band was “vital, essential, wild and surprising.”
“A unique talent, a very loving friend and father, and a great artist is gone, but never forget,” the band said.
Wales was scheduled to attend the performance of Weezer Fest Sunday riots in Chicago.
“I’m excited to see the kids, hang out and have a good time,” he wrote on his Facebook page earlier this month.
