Escaped Inmate Port-A-Potty, A prison inmate who escaped from a moving vehicle in Lockport was captured Friday night in Rockdale. Inmate Cesar Sanchez, 37, was being transported from the Bridgeview courthouse to Stateville Correctional Center in Crest Hill when he kicked a van door open and hopped out near 159th Street and Farrell Road at about 2:15 p.m.
At 8:20 p.m., Joliet and Cook County canines tracked Sanchez to a portable toilet in the yard of the Waste Management Depot in the 1800 block of Moen Avenue in Rockdale.
“The canines hit on the area, and the escapee was found inside, hiding in the well area of the Porta-Potty,” Rockdale Chief Robert Dykstra said. “It took a little convincing to get him out.”
Dykstra said Sanchez was still wearing his prison jumpsuit when he surrendered.
Department of Corrections officers took custody of Sanchez at the scene and took him for a medical evaluation. One police officer at the scene said there was significant discussion over which vehicle would be used to transport a man after he’d spent several hours in the outdoor toilet’s waste.
“There’s going to be a D.O.C. van that’s going to get a thorough cleaning tomorrow,” he said.
Police sources said earlier reports of a prison jumpsuit being found in Homer Glen were investigated, but appeared to be unfounded.
“The activity in the area made this a very busy night,” Dykstra said. “A resident reported someone trying to break in that turned out to just be a kid at the wrong house, but because of (the escape) we had to check if he’d been over there.”
