Eddie Franklin

Eddie Franklin, Aretha Franklin’s son, was severely beaten at a gas station in Detroit, spokesman for the singing legend Tuesday.

Eddie Franklin, which is about 50 years, was attacked Monday night and underwent surgery in a hospital, Gwendolyn Quinn, said in a statement. A witness said two men and a woman may have been involved in the attack, the statement did not identify the witness or the direction of a possible motive.

Quinn told the Associated Press by early Tuesday morning that he had no information beyond the statement.

A woman who was with Franklin said police entered the station and when he returned, he had been attacked, police spokesman Eren Stephens said. The woman then drove to a hospital in Franklin, knocked him out and went to a police station to file a report, police said.

But despite Quinn, said Franklin had undergone surgery, police in Detroit, said it was in the hospital when the researchers stopped.

Franklin said they “went out on his own,” Stephens said.

The AP left several messages to Quinn on Tuesday, looking for updated information. A hospital spokeswoman confirmed a man named Eddie Franklin was treated there, but was not able to offer full details.

Stephens said he was not entirely clear what had happened and investigators want to talk to Franklin.

“I really need to talk to him because he is the one who was assaulted,” he said. “We will advise you and make (a report), but it is voluntary.”
