Earth Day As Communist Plot

April 24, 2014 by

Earth Day As Communist Plot, April 22, 2012, marks the 42nd anniversary of Earth Day. And while this annual event is held to promote awareness of environmental issues, it’s not always easy being green. Here’s a look at some environmental skeletons in the closet related to Earth Day.

* Wisconsin Sen. Gaylord Nelson chose the date of April 22, 1970, for the first Earth Day to allow for heavy participation for an environmental “teach in” on college campuses without interfering with exam schedules or spring breaks. But April 22, 1970, was also the 100th anniversary of the birth of communist politician Vladimir Lenin, a detail that conspiracy theorists jumped on. In an April 15, 1971, article in The New York Times, Sen. Edmund S. Muskie revealed that the FBI even conducted widespread surveillance at the inaugural Earth Day rallies across the country. To this day, some people believe that Earth Day is a communist plot.

* Environmental activist Ira Einhorn took the stage at the 1970 Earth Day kickoff in Philadelphia, even laying claim to being a co-founder of the event, according to MSNBC. Seven years later, Philly’s self-described Earth Day guru was embroiled in a police investigation when the mummified body of his missing girlfriend, Holly Maddux, was found stuffed in a trunk in his closet. Einhorn skipped town and hid out in France for decades before he was finally extradited back to the United States and convicted of the murder. The 1970 Earth Week Committee of Philadelphia later denounced the convicted murderer’s Earth Day claims via a letter that stated Einhorn was not one of the organizers and “was not welcome there, nor did he contribute in any material way to the committee’s activities.”

* Time Magazine’s 2008 Earth Day issue featured a controversial cover photo that had some veterans shocked and outraged. The cover shot was a doctored up version of the historic 1945 flag-raising photo from Iwo Jima, with Marines raising a tree instead of the American flag for the cover story “How To Win The War on Global Warming.” According to Fox News, Time managing editor Richard Stengel defended the magazine’s use of the photo, saying, “Our story says there needs to be an effort along the lines of preparing for World War II to combat global warming and climate change.”

* In 2010, the 40th anniversary of Earth Day was overshadowed by the worst environmental disaster in U.S. history. The April 20, 2010, explosion of the offshore drilling rig Deepwater Horizon killed 11 workers and spilled more than 200 million gallons of crude oil into the Gulf of Mexico, killing countless marine life and endangered animals. According to National Geographic, Defenders of Wildlife marine biology expert Richard Charter said of the disaster, “This will go down in the history books as the Earth Day blowout.”
