Duchamp, Marcel Duchamp (July 28, 1887 to October 2, 1968;]) was a French artist whose work is most often associated with Dada and Surrealist movements. Duchamp’s output influenced the development of post-war, I Western art. He advised collectors of modern art, like Peggy Guggenheim and others, helping to shape the tastes of Western art during this period. A playful man, Duchamp challenged the conventional thinking about the artistic process and art marketing, not so much writing, but by subversive actions such as dubbing a urinal art and appointing Fontaine. He produced relatively few works of art, while moving rapidly through the avant-garde circles of his time.
The creative act is not performed by the artist alone, the viewer does the work in contact with the outside world by deciphering and interpreting its inner qualifications and thus contributes to the creative act.
Marcel Duchamp was born in Blainville-Crevon Seine-Maritime in the Haute-Normandie region of France, and grew up in a family who enjoy cultural activities. The art of the painter and engraver Emile Nicolle, his maternal grandfather, filled the whole house and the family loved to play chess, read books, paint and make music together.
As a child, with his two older brothers already away from home to school in Rouen, Duchamp was close to his sister, Suzanne, who was an accomplice in games and activities conjured from his fertile imagination. At 10 years, Duchamp followed in the footsteps of his brothers when he left home and began his studies at the Lycée Corneille in Rouen. For the next 7 years he was locked in an education system focused on intellectual development. Although not an outstanding student, his best subject was mathematics and he won two awards in mathematics at school. He also won a prize for drawing in 1903, and its opening in 1904, he won a coveted first, validating his recent decision to become an artist.
He learned academic drawing from a teacher who tried in vain to protect his students from Impressionism, Post-Impressionism and other avant-garde influences. However, Duchamp true artistic mentor at the time was his brother Jacques Villon, whose fluid and incisive style he sought to emulate. At 14, her first serious attempts were art drawings and watercolors depicting his sister Suzanne in various poses and activities. This summer he also painted landscapes in an impressionist style with oil.
Marcel Duchamp was a urinal. Jasper Johns used the American flag. And Andy Warhol turned to Campbell’s soup cans.
Since modern art was invented, artists have transformed the strangest things in unexpected masterpieces.
