Peterson is already charged in 2004 death of his third wife, Kathleen Savio.
His fourth wife, Stacy Peterson, disappeared in 2007 and has never been found.
Peterson has been named a suspect but not charged in his disappearance.
Sgt. Tom Burek said state police are investigating a possible track near Peoria, but could not give further details.
The celebrity website TMZ reports that police said, Peterson told a fellow inmate that an accomplice helped him dispose of the body of his fourth wife.
The alleged accomplice allegedly led police to a private game reserve near Peoria, Ill., where police are investigating the site.
The Chicago Sun-Times said its sources disputed report TMZ.com ‘s of the last tip came from an inmate who had spoken with Drew Peterson, but the paper also reports that the police searched the area Friday’s game and are set to return on Saturday to dig.
Peterson has pleaded innocent to charges of first-degree murder in the death of Savio. Jury selection in this case is scheduled to begin July 8.
