Documentary Manassas Tigers, Manassas High School is getting national attention thanks to a documentary about the school’s football team that is now nominated for an Academy Award.

Bill Courtney, a successful businessman, took over as head coach at Manassas High School as a volunteer.

“You’ve got to understand, there was no agenda,” said Courtney. “I wanted to coach football and there was a bunch of kids that needed a football coach. It’s as simple as that.”

The story is now an Oscar-nominated documentary. “Undefeated” chronicles the Manassas High School Tigers’ rise from a team that had won one game in three seasons to a team that won 18 in two seasons.

Shot in 2009 during Courtney’s final season as coach and edited over the course of two years, “Undefeated” has been nominated for an Academy Award in the documentary/feature category. “It’s humbling,” said Courtney.

Courtney said he is honored, but maintains perspective.

“If this defines us or if this is the best thing that ever happens to us, then we have some real soul problems,” he said. “What needs to define us is the discipline, the character, and the commitment that made us better.”
