Derrick Thomas Cause Of Death, Derrick Thomas Wrongful Death Trial Begins , The trial over the death of a star linebacker with the Kansas City Chiefs began in the Jackson County Courthouse Wednesday.

The family of Derrick Thomas (pictured, right) filed a wrongful death lawsuit after the 33-year-old athlete died after a rollover crash in January 2000.

At issue in the trial is whether Thomas died because he wasn’t wearing a seatbelt and was thrown from the vehicle, or if the car itself — a 1999 Chevrolet Suburban — is to blame.

Michael Piuze, the lead attorney for Thomas’ family, used a model of the athlete’s Suburban in an effort to prove the roof of the sport utility vehicle crushed and ultimately killed Thomas. Piuze is well-known for winning a case against the tobacco industry in California, in which a jury awarded $28 billion in punitive damages.

The plaintiffs claim General Motors is to blame for a design flaw that allowed the roof to collapse.
