Denzel Washington And Atheists

February 14, 2012 by staff

Denzel Washington And Atheists, Denzel Washington is known for bringing a certain intensity to his roles, and his new film “Safe House” is no exception. But while the theatrically trained actor certainly has an innate talent for appearing menacing when he wants, he still likes to do extensive research. And for “Safe House,” he decided to learn how to be a sociopath.

TODAY’s Matt Lauer talks with actor Denzel Washington, who plays a CIA traitor in the new thriller “Safe House.” The actor says he spent about 6 months collaborating with the screenwriter to perfect his role.

“I read this book called ‘The Sociopath Next Door,’ and that was like my Bible, that I related to,” he told TODAY’s Matt Lauer. “The traits of a sociopath: No conscience, no sense of remorse, usually atheist, just always want to win, dominate…. He’s about to get waterboarded and he’s telling the guy he brought the wrong towels. He’s still trying to win.”

Atheists may not appreciate being lumped in with sociopaths, but Washington is unapologetic about the film’s violence: “It’s rated ‘R’ and it is what it is. It’s an intense film, it’s not a comedy.”

As for what’s up next for the two-time Oscar winner: Possibly getting back on stage. Washington has a 2010 Tony for his role in Broadway’s “Fences,” and says “I love theater and I want to get back on stage. I’m talking with Kenny Leon (“Fences” director) now about another play. I’m producing a new film that will start shooting in April or May. I like directing, and I like acting.”
