Democrat Wins California Congressional Race, Janice Hahn Democrat easily won a seat in Congress in the Los Angeles area beach towns, dodging a challenge from Republican Craig Huey sometimes-bitter campaign.
Hahn, a city councilman in Los Angeles and a member of a political dynasty, won about 55% of the vote and 45 Huey% when all votes were counted Tuesday night.
She succeeds Democrat Jane Harman, who resigned to run in Washington in the 36th district of California.
For a special election whose outcome would have little impact on the partisan balance the U.S. House, running back between Hahn and Huey, sometimes turned nasty.
A conservative PAC super published a notice showing as a stripper Hahn also used racist images and language. Huey Hahn, a businessman who publishes Christian voter guides, “extreme” for his views on issues like abortion. Huey Hahn tried to portray as a career politician, and played tea party support in the campaign.
After the vote, Hahn vowed to press for more jobs and help for veterans. “When they get home, we must do a better job making sure they get their health benefits. They deserve it and we owe them,” he is quoted by the Daily Breeze.
The district, which stretches along the southern California coast from Venice to San Pedro, also includes the interior communities of South Bay as Torrance near the airport in Los Angeles.
The Republicans now have a majority of 240 to 193 in the U.S. House. There are two vacancies.
