Demi Lovato Chastises Disney Over Eating Disorder Joke, The Disney Channel has pulled two TV-show episodes after singer-actress Demi Lovato chastised it for a joke about eating disorders — the reason the former Disney starlet left her own series to enter rehab.
“What are we promoting here?” Lovato, 19, tweeted on Friday after a character in “Shake It Up” made a joke Lovato transcribed as, “I could just eat you up. Well, if I ate.”
“I find it really funny how a company can lose one of their actress’ from the pressures of an EATING DISORDER and yet still make joke about that very disease,” she wrote. “Dear Disney Channel, EATING DISORDERS ARE NOT SOMETHING TO JOKE ABOUT.”
Disney responded that same day via Twitter. “e hear you & are pulling both episodes as quickly as possible & reevaluating them,” it said, referring both to the episode in question, “Party It Up,” and, according to Us Weekly, an episode of “So Random!” The latter show is a spinoff of Lovato’s “Sonny with a Chance,” which she left in order to enter Illinois’ Timberline Knolls rehab facility from Nov. 1, 2010, through Jan. 27 to treat what she later told ABC News was bulimia.
In response to Disney’s action, Lovato thanked the channel, adding, “I have nothing against any specific actress/actor or tv show. Nor do I think there’s anything wrong with girls who aren’t curvy, I just was stating a fact that there needs to be more variety on television so young girls growing up don’t feel pressured to look one specific way. Tall, thin, curvy, short, whatever you are, you are beautiful.”
