Deadliest Mall Rampages, A Dover man charged with seven felonies alleging he smashed glass with a hammer at seven Fox Run Mall stores on Thursday was “crying for help,” said his mother.
Michael Williams, 34, of 105 Locust St., was arraigned for the felonies in the Exeter Circuit court on Friday when he was brought in shackles from the county jail. His mother, Rose Williams, told Judge David LeFrancois that her son had just been released from a psychiatric hospital and “needs help.”
Newington police Capt. Brian Newcomer told the court Williams was arrested in Somersworth for similar behavior just hours before he arrived at the Newington mall where he took a hammer to windows and display cases at the seven mall stores. Newcomer said Williams confessed to being upset because his car didn’t pass an inspection in Somersworth, an outburst ensued and he was arrested on charges alleging simple assault, reckless conduct and criminal mischief.
Somersworth police Capt. Russ Timmons said Williams smashed a glass display case with his hand at a muffler shop, then “proceeded to rearrange the furniture” and break a couple of chairs. He said Williams also swung at and hit the store manager before being taken into custody at about 1:15 p.m.
“He made bail and a few hours later, this happened,” said Newcomer. “It was a real volatile situation at the mall. Some people thought they were being robbed and others thought there were gunshots.”
Newcomer asked the court to set bail at $10,000 cash while stating Williams has ties to and recently returned from Georgia, is unemployed and a danger to the community.
