An independent panel of 22 experts, including nutritionists, dietitians, cardiologists and diabetelogists reviewed 20 popular diet profiles, which were developed by the U.S. reporters and editors News and World Report. Categories were created and then to rate the nutrition plans, including Best diets for weight loss, better diet heart healthy, diabetes diets, Diets general, and the best commercial diet plans.

The DASH diet received top honors in the two best overall diet and Best Diabetes Diet. Weight Watchers and took the gold for Best Commercial diet plan and the best diet to lose weight. Jenny Craig experts rank at number two in both categories.

The Mediterranean diet, the TLC (therapeutic changes in lifestyle) Diet and Weight Watchers all tied for second place in the best overall diet.

Other contenders include the raw food diet, the Ornish diet, which was ranked number one in heart health, and the TLC diet, a government plan designed to eat that won second place for best heart-healthy diet.
