Columbus Day Closings
October 10, 2011 by staff
Columbus Day Closings, I’ve heard from a reader who was actually quite annoying that the Star did not print a box of any closure or delays in city services this week in the observation of Columbus Day.
I brought this several times in the past, and I think it’s an interesting question. Banks, federal government offices, city offices and some government and some schools are closed on Columbus Day. However, many cities and county do not observe the holiday. And some of the lines here are a bit confusing. For example, Jackson County administrative offices are open, but the courts are not.
Garbage collection around most of the metropolitan area is in the normal schedule, according to my checks. But this is a good reminder to the newsroom: Everyone knows the big holidays like Christmas means holiday schedules. It is the least important people really need to know if they should put their garbage or wait for the mail or not. Even a quick note to say: “Most city services are in normal times” would help.
