Citigroup was formed from one of the largest mergers in the history of the world by combining banking giant Citicorp and Travelers Group financial conglomerate on April 7, 1998. Citigroup Inc. has the world’s largest network of financial services, covering 140 countries, with around 16,000 offices worldwide. The company employs approximately 260,000 employees worldwide and owns more than 200 million customer accounts in over 140 countries. It is a dealer in Treasury securities in the United States. Citigroup has suffered huge losses during the global financial crisis of 2008 and was rescued in November 2008 to a massive bailout by the U.S. government. Its main shareholders are funds in the Middle East and Singapore. On February 27, 2009, Citigroup announced that the U.S. government would take a 36% interest in the company and by converting $ 25 billion in emergency assistance in shares, the game was reduced to 27% after Citigroup sold 21 billion ordinary shares and equity shares in the sale of the largest in the history of the United States, surpassing Bank of America and 19 billion sale of shares within a month.
Citigroup is one of four major U.S. banks, with Bank of America, JP Morgan Chase and Wells Fargo. Citibank, a major international bank is the banking division of consumer financial services giant Citigroup. Citibank was founded in 1812 as City Bank of New York, later First National City Bank of New York. In March 2010 [update], is the holding company Citigroup third largest U.S. bank by total assets, after Bank of America and JP Morgan Chase.
Citibank’s retail banking activities in over 100 countries and territories around the world. More than half of its 1,400 offices are located in the United States, mostly in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco Bay Area, and Miami. More recently, Citibank has expanded its operations in the areas of Boston, Philadelphia, Houston, Dallas and Washington, DC metropolitan areas.
In addition to traditional banking operations, Citibank card offer credit insurance and investment products. Their online services division of the most successful in the field,  claiming approximately 15 million users.
Following the global financial crisis of 2008-2009 and huge losses in the value of its mortgage assets at risk, the government of the United States had rescued Citibank under the plans agreed to Citigroup. On November 23, 2008, in addition to the initial grant of 25 billion, and another 25 billion was invested in the company and the guarantees for risky assets and an amount of 306 billion.
