Christchurch New Zealand

Christchurch New Zealand, At the moment not many details yet, but the list shows a USGS Earthquake M7.2 earthquake ~ 25-30 km from Christchurch, New Zealand. I’ll post more details as I find them, but here’s a Google map of the epicenter – UPDATE: The location puts it even more refined in Christchurch, in the northwest. The earthquake appears to be relatively shallow – 16 to 30 km depth, but this is a preliminary estimate. I do not know much about the tectonics / structure around Christchurch, but you can see that Christchurch is located south of the termination of the subduction zone between the Australian and Pacific plates. The historical seismicity of the area means that this is not a likely place for a major earthquake. There is no volcanic activity in the South Island of New Zealand (that I know … someone knows better?)
