China Telecommunication, France Telecom SA, a dominant telecommunications company in France, reportedly looking to buy Congo-China Telecom, the fourth largest telecom operator in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
According to reports, France Telecom will acquire 51 percent of Congo-China. Congo had approved a 49 percent sale to France Telecom for the African country and expects to receive 78 million, according to Faustin Mpaka, Chief of Staff, Ministry of the portfolio.
France Telecom has been to enter new markets such as Iraq and Morocco in order to increase their income, which has stagnated due to higher mobile penetration in most markets.
However, industryanlysts believe that Congo can be a challenge due to lack of infrastructure and low mobile penetration. Furthermore, it is also considered as one of the poorest African nations, with an average income per capita of only 300 y.
