Adrian Ionut Tanasoaia surrendered to police early Monday. He is accused of beating Hardy in a bar in the southern Romanian town of Giurgiu on Saturday night.
Mediafax news agency reported that Tanasoaia Hardy attacked because he wanted to dance with his girlfriend.
Hardy died shortly after undergoing surgery at a hospital in Bucharest on Sunday. The 23-year-old had suffered serious head injuries and was comatose when he was admitted to the hospital.
Hardy, who played for CSS Giurgiu in southern Romania, was the celebration of victory over their rivals Dinamo Bucharest, Giurgiu, when several men reported that attacked him.
“We are deeply saddened by the loss of a fine young man who had his life cut short at such a young age while he was overseas doing something he loved,” said Donald C. Cook, the university’s athletic director Hardy Sacred Heart before.
“This is a terrible tragedy and we are saddened as the University and a basketball program,” said Sacred Heart men’s basketball coach Dave Bike said in a statement. “This is not just a basketball player, but the person also. Transcends what happens on a basketball court. We feel great sadness and loss of Chauncey’s family and those close to him.” Hardy averaged 12.5 points for Sacred Heart in 2009-10.
