Catholic Schools Fire Single, Pregnant Teacher

December 29, 2011 by staff

Catholic Schools Fire Single, Pregnant TeacherCatholic Schools Fire Single, Pregnant Teacher, Christa Dias was a teacher at Archdiocese of Cincinnati schools for nearly two years before, at five months pregnant, the thirty-one-year-old asked about maternity leave. But rather than grant Dias some well-deserved time off, the schools fired her because her baby was conceived by artificial insemination, reports.

From Jezebel: The Archdiocese of Cincinnati requires all employees to sign contracts stating that they’ll adhere to Catholic social teachings, including the assertion that being pregnant sans husband is a gravely immoral act. Someone tell that to the Virgin Mary.

The school originally said it fired her for being single and pregnant, but they were informed that that’s not technically legal, so they changed their tune to say they fired her for becoming pregnant via artificial insemination.

Dias was fired from Archdiocese of Cincinnati, where she was making $36,000 a year, in October 2010. Now the mother of a of an 11-month-old daughter, she is still unemployed.

“She has a right to her opinion, but she doesn’t have a right to violate her (employment) contract,” said Archdiocese of Cincinnati spokesman Dan Andriacco.

But Dias says men, whose soon-to-be-fatherhood is not quite as obvious as a women’s, are not punished for breaking for the same rules. “It’s a double standard. I’m suing so they can’t do this to any more women,’ Dias told If the school’s more lenient treatment of men accused of sexual abuse indicates anything, she may be right. From Jezebel:

Perhaps appropriately, the man who fired Dias, Rev. James Kiffermeyer, was himself suspended in 2002 after allegations arose that he engaged in sexual misconduct with two male high school students. He was reinstated in 2006. The archdiocese of Cincinnati hasn’t escaped the sex scandal that’s engulfed the Catholic Church over the last decade or so, either; in 2003, the archdiocese pled no contest to charges they ignored sexual abuse of boys by clergy in the 1980′s and 90′s. And the two priests alleged to have engaged in the abuse were suspended like Kiffermeyer, not fired as Dias was fired.

“I’m disappointed more than anything that I couldn’t continue my career because I wanted a child,” said Dias.

Where is the Love. Just another reason why the Church is declining. I can accept that what she chose to do may not fit in Church doctrine, but how can the proper response be to remove her. Does not the Good Shepard guide the wayward sheep back to the flock? Let her know that what she did was wrong, but let her also know that she and her child are still children of God and are LOVED.

Isn’t it illegal or in violation of a contract to touch young boys also? The catholics need to get over themselves. Hopefully this lady will get a job in the public school system. God knows they could use her.

  3. Hollis Brown on December 30th, 2011 2:53 pm

Are you kidding me? This is pathetic, but what do you expect from the catholic church. Apparently it was ok to molest young boys, but its not ok to use a turkey baster to get pregnant.

I am not a religious person, and stories like this reinforce my position. The Catholic religion has got to be the most hypicritical religion ever. Just look at the history. These are the same people who’s leaders are molesting and violating children and only getting a slap on the hand. This is the same religion that who, in the middle ages, were killing people if they didn’t follow their religion (spanish inquisition). Heck, the Catholic religion has killed more people for not following their religion more than any other religion. Now, if this woman had committed adultry or was fooling around and got pregnant, I might be able to understand that. Bottom line is, she wanted to have a child while still relatively young. And, going back to what louneson stated, what about the virgin Mary. She had to be artificially inseminated. Shame on the Catholic Church!!

The Catholic Church has always had a double standard where women and men are involved. I am a Catholic born and raised and there are many ideals of the religion I disagree with on and is artificial insemination is one of them, you are going to temell that even a married couple can not have this procedure done due to it goes against the beliefs of the Church. BS!!!! If a couple can not concieve the “normal” way and they can this way then go for it!! If this young lady wants to have a child and can not find a man she wants to be married to in order to concieve this child then yes she has this right. The Church needs to come out of the dark ages and come into the new age. This pregnancy could have been easily explained to the parents, more than likely the school didn’t bother to tell the parents that the teacher was let go because she was artificially inseminated so she could have a child. Knowing the Catholic Religion the school probably allowed the parents to assume that the teacher was fooling around and got pregnant thus soiling her reputation and making sure no one stood up for the teacher either.

What?? This is insane! Okay to forgive and forget priest that molest children…but, not this? Quit playing God….your only human Catholic diocese, NOT GOD!

religion-man’s ULTIMATE excuse to kill each other—— i rather follow my moral compass- whic was given to each of us at birth….

although some didnt get it– they become lawyers or politicians!!!

It is insane. Catholics are hypocrite. See priests molesting children. Worse scene.
Woman becomes pregnant. It is normal and human.
What Catholics schoool is doing now is VERY INHUMANE and CRUEL.

  10. Mary on December 31st, 2011 6:03 pm

Mary got pregnant while engaged to Joseph and was technically unmarried before conception. Okay, she got pregnant by the Holy Spirit and this teacher got pregnant by artificial means. Some women want to have a child but there are not too many decent guys out there and I can understand her needs to wanting a child. I am catholic and while this doctrine contain strict rules, what about all those priests who molested children and the church knew about it. It is a double standard. The church should be more accountable when they want to go by the books. She could prevail especially with the argument that they allowed the priests to continue teaching even after they molested many children.

Religion has caused nothing but trouble as far back as people have been here……because of religion Galileo was arrested for having a telescope proving there are planets & the universe… the history about Galileo for an eye opener.
My friend and her sister were brainwashed over religion by their mother……all the mother has ever watched since I can remember was the church channel……One time we were out and the moon was red…they actually grabbed me & started running to their car yelling repent, repent! beacsue they were so convinced the world was about to end……I actually peed my pants laughing……they were pissed at me…..they wouldn’t let me leave to go home either……..nice

  12. somebodyelse on December 31st, 2011 6:43 pm

She signed a contract. Reason enough to be fired. I don’t agree but she did sign.

  13. DAZED AND AMAZED on December 31st, 2011 9:00 pm

Let’s see here. First we have Priests molesting children; which is apparently ok w/the Church since they were complicit in the cover-up, then we have the Church running TV ads trying to get people to return to the Church and its teachings and now we have a good teacher fired because she wanted to be a Mom. (which, by the way, is what the Church needs – more parishoners). Is it me or has the Catholic Church gone completely bat-sht?

People wonder why so many find religious teachings and institutions to be irrelevant in the 21st century. Perhaps this will clarify things for them.

  14. DAZED AND AMAZED on December 31st, 2011 9:05 pm

Almost forgot… the teacher is the one who committed the “Grave Immoral Act”. Really? What phrase, exactly, does the Catholic Church reserve for Priests who molest CHILDREN???? Boys will be boys? or Reagan’s “There you go again”?

  15. Bob on December 31st, 2011 11:31 pm

I wonder if any of the politicians running in Iowa have the courage to speak out about this travesty?…….Oh wait….They’re republicans…Forget it…….

  16. Tawnya M. on January 1st, 2012 12:20 am

Wow. Just wow. Double standards still running rampant in the Catholic church. I don’t care if it is against their beliefs, it’s not legal to fire someone for being pregnant! I hope she takes them to the cleaners.

  17. Stacey on January 1st, 2012 4:15 pm

So, has anyone else wondered how many single female teachers have found themselves pregnant and gone and had an *ga*p* AB***ON!!! Guess we will never know, because like the rest of the world, the Catholic church doesn’t want to do what’s correct and moral, it just want to APPEAR correct and moral.

  18. Linda on January 2nd, 2012 3:18 am

Technically catholic schools can fire a teacher for any reason that goes against their religion. If a women is living with a man she is not married to, she can be fired as well. That’s just the way it is. Not saying I agree with it, but I did read all the stipulations in the contract I signed before I took a similar teaching position, that a teacher must abide by all ideas of the Catholic Faith. If a man is said to have gotten a women pregnant and does not submit to a paternity test, he can be fired as well. If she signed the contract, she should know that CAtholics do not believe in artificial insemination.

This is where the catholic church amuses me. When the clergy sins be it by molesting young boys, the best the church does is to transfer them to another parish. They continue to be on the church payroll-shame.

  20. Cris on January 2nd, 2012 3:36 pm

What if the she had been raped and got pregant from it. The Catholic do not believe in abortion.

  21. Richard on January 2nd, 2012 10:55 pm

Im a baptist preacher and what she did falls out side of of what is sin she did not find a “one night stand” she wanted children but did not do it “the old fashioned way. Ifter finding out the details I would not dismiss her as a worker in my church.

  22. IEGUY on January 3rd, 2012 2:52 am

Another case of where we’re supposed to “except” religion because somehow its “tenets” are “beyond” the law. As for the supposed stipulations in the contract, again, they’re only allowed because we’re somehow supposed to believe that the same religion (Christianity) that just celebrated the birth of a kid to a 13 year old girl as something special and unique, somehow above laws of the 21st century.

  23. Elena on January 3rd, 2012 7:21 am

She broke her contract. She lost her job. She knew the rules. Thats how it goes. As far as Catholic Priests molesting children, they are not the only ones. There are many other Ministers that are also guilty of this. But the Catholics are the ones in the spotlight. Maybe the women being molested by their Ministers should wake up ans press charges against them too.
