Catherine Kieu Becker, Prosecutors say an argument over a woman was having guests from Southern California to cut off the pns of her husband and left a garbage disposal. Catherine Kieu, 48, was charged Wednesday with torture in a case that has garnered international attention and could their land behind bars for life.
Kieu appeared briefly in Superior Court in Orange County jail with a blue monkey, hiding her face in her hair long and dark. She was appointed a prosecutor and denied bail.
She was placed in the medical ward of the prison to be evaluated psychologically, sheriff’s spokesman Jim Amormino told the Orange County Register.
The small woman whose strings resounded as she shuffled into the cage area of?? The room where inmates are made to return to court July 22 for arraignment, which continued on Wednesday, and a bail review hearing.
Kieu and her husband were living together in an apartment in Garden Grove property. He had filed for divorce in May, and argued before the attack of friends staying at the apartment, authorities said.
On Monday night, police said Kieu shot a meal and served it to the victim.
The 60-year-old began to feel ill and went to sleep, then woke up strapped to the bed as Kieu attacked him with a kitchen knife 10 inches, police said.
He then placed the pns on a garbage disposal, police said.
“It’s hard to believe what could motivate a person to do such things,” said the head of the district attorney’s staff, Susan Kang Schroeder, out of court. “One of the worst things that can make a person less than kill him.”
Police did not release the name of the victim. Underwent surgery and was in good condition at the University of California, Irvine Medical Center, hospital spokesman John Murray said.
Murray declined to say if the pns is reattached or provide any information about the condition of the victim, citing patient privacy laws.
Dr. Joel Gelman Center UC Irvine head Reconstructive Urology, did not comment specifically on the victim but said a severed pns is “a terrible loss and is most difficult in our specialty to treat surgically.”
In case of loss of the pns, a pns-like structure with limited use can be built out of flesh and skin of the forearm, said Gelman.
Kieu was charged with one felony count of torture, one felony count of aggravated violence and improvements to sentencing for great bodily injury and personal use of a knife. If convicted of all charges, could face life imprisonment without possibility of parole.
Garden Grove Police, said Lt. Jeff Nightengale Kieu called police Monday night to report a medical emergency and told the officers that arrive “deserved it”, before pointing to the room where the victim was found bleeding profusely. She was arrested without incident and refused to speak to officers.
The couple married in December 2009. When the victim filed for divorce, citing irreconcilable differences, court documents said. Kieu slowly moving her things from the apartment, authorities said.
The victim declined to comment when contacted by phone Tuesday by the Registry.
“This is a private matter,” he said.
A call from the AP to a telephone number listed in court documents that the victim was answered Wednesday by a person who quickly hung up.
Officials visited the victim on Tuesday and found it “surprisingly good spirits considering everything that has happened,” said Nightengale.
In 1993, Lorena Bobbitt cut off the pns of her husband in Virginia and threw it out the window of her car in a field beside the road. He said years of sexual abuse led to attack, and was acquitted by reason of insanity. The pns is reattached later.
