Call Of Duty: Black Ops Sells $360 Million, Much like the last two Call of Duty games, Modern Warfare 3 has had a record-breaking launch.
In 2009 Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 brought in an estimated $310 million during its first day in the United States and United Kingdom alone. A year later Black Ops topped that figure with $360 million on its first day in those same two markets.
Modern Warfare 3 saw a similar jump in the U.S. and U.K. again on Tuesday, when it was released on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC, and Wii. It sold through an estimated 6.5 million units and brought in an estimated $400 million during its first 24 hours of availability. According to Activision that is once again good enough for it to be called “the biggest entertainment launch ever.”
So much for Battlefield 3 potentially taking a chunk out of Call of Duty’s user base.
“We believe the launch of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is the biggest entertainment launch of all time in any medium, and we achieved this record with sales from only two territories,” said Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick. “Other than Call of Duty, there has never been another entertainment franchise that has set opening day records three years in a row. Life-to-date sales for the Call of Duty franchise exceed worldwide theatrical box office for Star Wars and Lord of the Rings, two of the most successful entertainment franchises of all time.”
