Leading into the Thanksgiving holiday last week, the company has contributed over 75,000 pounds of holiday turkeys (whole turkey) to soup kitchens and the military to reach families who may need a little help with food of the party.
“This year we doubled our contributions proactively whole turkeys last year,” said Keith Shoemaker, CEO of Butterball, and LLC. “The hunger in our country affects about 15 percent of U.S. households, according to recent reports (1). I encourage other food producers to do what we can to help in the difficult national situation.”
In an effort to spread some holiday cheer, the company initially focused on the donation of 75,000 pounds of turkey vacation locally, near their plants and corporate offices in Arkansas, Colorado, Missouri and North Carolina, but has also donated to other communities such as Los Angeles, California Some of the target groups include: the Arkansas Hunger Relief Alliance, which collects and distributes food to six food banks across the state, Airmen and Families of Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, North Carolina, Fort Carson Soldier and Family Assistance Center, United Outreach Resource Center, Inc. and meals at home in Colorado, and the kitchen of the Salvation Army soup in Carthage, Mo. In addition, as Feeding America (Second Harvest) participant, Butterball donated to Feeding America from January 1, 2010 until November. 11, 2010 amounted to about 85,000 pounds.
“We are honored to help make the holidays a little brighter and livelier, providing people with the bucks to enjoy the centerpiece of your meal,” said Zapatero. “The reality is however that this is just a drop in the ocean. Always wish you could do more, and I know there are others in the industry of meat and poultry that are donating and working to alleviate hunger. Thank you for the opportunity to join with individuals and organizations in our communities to support nonprofit organizations that help brave the needs of the community every day. ”
