Burmeseclassic, Sixteen films have been nominated in Burma Academy Awards for films released in 2009, which will take place in Naypyidaw on January 23, according to the Ministry of Information. Critics say Nay Toe Myint Myat and are likely to win the award for best actor Kyaw Zin Eindra, Soe Myat May Than Nu and Thuza Thinza Wint Kyaw have a good chance of winning the award for best actress.

The ceremony takes place every year since 1952, presented awards in eleven categories: best actor, best actress, film Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Music, Best Sound, Best Screenplay, Best Editing, Best director and best film.

Last year, only seven awards were presented. Prominent director Soe Moe said that the number of films produced in 2009 was low and the quality of the films were poor compared to Burmese films in the past decades.

“The selection committee will choose the best films of poor quality,” he told Mizzima. “Most contemporary movies have no lasting value. The classic movies of the past by the directors and Thukha Shwedone Aung B. had lasting value. Today, to win a prize, we needed to win about 100 competitors. Now, even a comedy can win the award for the small number of films produced each year.

In the history of Burma Academy Awards, Yan Aung has received six awards; the highest number for an actor and former actress Khin Myint Myint won five awards, the highest for an actress.
