Buju Banton Arrest:Buju Banton, a 36-year-old Jamaican reggae star, has been in federal custody since Thursday in Miami for attempting to purchase and distribute cocaine.

Banton, born Mark Anthony Myrie, negotiated the purchase of cocaine from a police informant in Sarasota. According to the DEA he faces charges of conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute.

“Mr Myrie was arrested on a case based in Tampa. He is charged with intent to distribute cocaine, five kilos or more,” said David Melenkevitz, the Forida DEA information spokesman. “Right now he’s in custody in South Florida and he’ll be transferred to Tampa.”

The Kingston, Jamaica product was the center of controversy in 1998 as well, when he released a single called “Boom Bye Bye” that detailed the torture and murder of gay men.
