Buffalo Bills Score
October 10, 2010 by staff
Tom Brady was in a car accident unharmed but three days before the opening of the season. Laurence Maroney was traded before the second game. The Patriots earned a slim 38-30 victory at Buffalo Bills unhappy in their third game.
Then in their fourth game, they became the first team in NFL history to score on a throw, a pass, punt return, an interception and a blocked kick when they beat the Miami Dolphins 41 – 14.
And they pulled a huge surprise, three days after the game when they traded star receiver Randy Moss of the Minnesota Vikings.
It was an eventful season already, and the Patriots were still 12 games to play.
Thus, their bye week comes at a great time, giving them a chance to slow down, review what they have done, and spend more time in meetings and practices as they prepare to face the Ravens Baltimore Oct. 17 without Moss, who was their only proven deep threat.
“The bye week is perfect today,” receiver Brandon Tate said after returning a kickoff 103 yards for a touchdown against Miami.
When the Patriots resume play, their considerable dependence on the younger players expected to increase.
The bye has become more important to Tate Wednesday when Moss was traded. Tate is expected to replace Moss in the starting lineup, even though an injury limited him to two games as a rookie last season after the Patriots had drafted in the third round. But it has produced this season with two kickoff returns for touchdowns and 11 receptions, two more than had Moss for 135 yards.
“Randy is a single player, so I do not know if you replace a player like Randy or Kevin Faulk,” coach Bill Belichick. “They have their own unique set of skills. The other players do different things. … This is what we do collectively as a team of total football and that’s what he always was. That’s what this is. ”
Faulk, New England is back valuable purpose, was lost for the season with a torn knee ligament in a 28-14 loss to the Jets in Week 2. This happened a few days after sending another running back, Maroney, Denver. And Fred Taylor missed last Sunday’s game with a toe injury.
Everything that makes room for another promising youngster, BenJarvus Green-Ellis. Operation 25 years back has rushed for 174 yards and two touchdowns over the last two games.
Other young players have already had impact rookie tight ends Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez, the second year running back Danny Woodhead, second-year safety Patrick Chung and linebacker Jerod Mayo in third year.
Against Miami, Chung, a special teams star player from Oregon, has blocked an attempted field placement and a punt and returned an interception for a touchdown.
“College is over now. This is the big league, “he said. “I must prepare myself for the next.”
With all the new faces around – and with veterans Moss, Maroney and Faulk gone – there is a constant critic: Brady.
The two-time Super Bowl MVP is a popular move to second in the NFL behind Peyton Manning. He completed 69.2 percent of his passes for nine touchdowns and only two interceptions in leading the Patriots to a 3-1 records and tie for AFC East lead with the Jets.
And he is pleased that young players have contributed.
“It is very important because, as an offense, you want to defend everybody,” Brady said. “If they are alone to defend a guy and the guy you keep throwing, so it is not a very good offense. Brandon must be involved. (Woodhead) must be involved. … We must continue to find a way to spread the ball. ”
The Patriots lead the NFL with 32.75 points per game, but allowed an average of 24. The best defense against Miami but depends on young players who have struggled at times.
Mayo, however, was solid with 16 tackles against Miami.
“Jerod One of our most consistent players,” Belichick said. “This is a very dedicated player, professional workers with good skills and an understanding of the game, and great competitive nature. He participated throughout the week to do things, to do things better, to understand what our opponents are doing. ”
The linebackers Brandon Spikes and Jermaine Cunningham, both drafted out of Florida also played a particularly important role for the recruits.
Like their teammates, they may have been motivated by talk that the Miami defense has been poor and that the Patriots have struggled to win on the road.
“We had something to prove,” said Mayo. “Everybody doubted us, but we like that. Continue to do so. ”
The doubts will persist for some time, especially because the Ravens 33-14 Patriots in Foxborough in the first round of the playoffs last season. And they are not likely to end this game, not with Moss gone and unproven receivers supported.
“I think everybody is happy when the bye week is,” Belichick said. “It’s a good opportunity for your team (you) just try to enjoy it.”
