Breast Implant Disappears

Breast Implant Disappears, A cancer survivor has had to have further surgery after her body ‘swallowed’ her breast implant during a Pilates exercise. The 59-year-old from Baltimore, Maryland, had been performing the ‘Valsalva’ manoeuvre when she felt the implant disappear into her body.
She was taken to the Johns Hopkins hospital in the city where surgeons found the implant and reinstated it.

Amazingly the woman said she felt no pain and had no trouble breathing, despite the implant nestling in the space between her lungs.
The bizarre incident has now been published in the New England Journal of Medicine.

The woman, who has not been named, had undergone a double mastectomy but decided to have breast implants.
Her ribs had also been weakened by a heart operation.

She had been performing the breathing technique, in which a person takes a deep breath but holds it in while attempting to exhale forcibly, building up enough pressure to force her right implant through the thin tissue between her ribs.
Cosmetic surgeon Dr Anthony Youn, who did not treat the woman, told MSNBC the case was a ‘freak occurrence’.

‘What likely happened in this instance is that the breast implant was placed under the chest muscle and on top of the ribs, an extremely common practice in breast reconstruction,’ Dr Youn said.

‘When the patient Valsalva’d, the pectoralis (chest) muscle likely contracted and pushed the implant through the space between her ribs.

‘The weakened scar tissue was easily torn, and the strength of the pectoralis muscle pushed the implant deep into her chest.’
