Brandon LairdBrandon Laird, Gene Monahan went to Brandon Laird this morning and handed him a ball inside a clear display box – the first major league beaten by last night’s game, an RBI single in his second plate appearance and first officer major league at-bats in his first major league game. He said it is headed by her parents’ home, where you can rest next to the ball that represents his brother the first hit in the majors. Gerald Laird is now the Cardinals’ backup catcher.

Emotions continue today for Brandon. He will make his first major league start at third base.

“I’m still excited and happy to be here,” he said. “Entering yesterday’s game, everything seemed to happen so fast, I had the opportunity to be nervous.”

Laird said he brought two gloves for each position held. He can play third, first and gardens – left and right. It was originally a 27th round selection in 2007. Last year, he batted .281 with 25 homers and 102 RBI combined between Double-A Trenton and Triple-A Scranton / Wilkes-Barre. Home runs and led all Yankees minor leaguers. He was also named the MVP of the Eastern League and rookie of the year.

This year, was batting .266 with 10 homers and 49 RBIs in 90 games at Triple-A, where he was primarily playing third.

“There was kind of hard spring this spring, swinging the bat,” said Joe Girardi. “We knew it was a much better player than that. We kept him around. We kept playing. He sent down sometimes when he was batting with us. He was a guy who was aggressive. You did not see it through struggles increasingly be tentative. It seemed to fight for everything. I thought it was a good sign.

“I think sometimes it’s good for the fight, because I think it shows the harshness in you. Because the game is never going to be easy. He had a slow start in Triple A this year. But we look in the last three months and have been very good. That’s a good sign too. It shows me that know how to make adjustments. ”

Gerald Laird is considered the first success with his Cardinals teammates in Pittsburgh.

“He said he just got in after the game,” said Brandon. “He said he kept everyone in the clubhouse to see. He said everyone went crazy. He gave me a call.’s Proud of me.”

Mark Teixeira played with Gerald Laird in Texas.

“I saw one hit in his first major league at-bats,” said Teixeira. “I think it brings good luck to the Laird family.”

* Maybe Joe Girardi is taking hold in the first six right front in the absence of Alex Rodriguez. For the second straight game, are Brett Gardner, Derek Jeter, Curtis Granderson, Teixeira, Robinson Cano and Nick Swisher?

* New Girardi does not seem particularly concerned over the poor start Phil Hughes Friday night.

“We know what we can do,” Girardi said. “Its just Phil has to go and do it.”
