The health-conscious buyers looking for a cheaper alternative to blueberries and blackberries are rich in antioxidants may want to buy a bag of black rice.

Xu Zhimin, an associate professor in the Department of Food Science at Louisiana State University, told attendees of a recent conference in Boston that a spoonful of black rice contains more antioxidants found in one tablespoon of berries.

Rice also has less sugar and higher in fiber and vitamin E antioxidants berries, Xu said in a statement.

Like some fruits, black rice contains anthocyanin antioxidants, which have been associated with the fight against heart disease, cancer and other diseases.

Xu also said that in addition to people who eat black rice, food manufacturers could use it, or extract of bran, breakfast cereals, beverages, cakes, cookies and other products.

Xu made his comments to attendees of the National Meeting of the American Chemical Society this week.
