Billy Graham

October 28, 2011 by staff

Billy Graham, I believe in God, but I can not. There is so much evil in the world that I can not believe that God exists, or if it does, who cares about us. How I can overcome this? I really want to believe. – F.B.

A. Dear FB: I’m thankful you want to believe – that God will honor your desire to show you. Jesus promised, “Ask and you shall be given, seek and ye shall find, knock and it shall be opened” (Matthew 7:7).

But do not expect soon to convince God nothing is real. You can choose to do that – but it’s not your usual way of working, or you expect it. Instead, God wants you to look where you can find. Where is that? Not necessarily in the world around us (though no doubt witness the creation of his power and glory). As you note, the world is full of all manner of evil – and if you only look there, you may not find it.

Where, then, must seek God? They seek in Christ Jesus – because he was God in human flesh. Soon we will celebrate Christmas – and the central message of Christmas is that God came down from heaven and became a man. That man was Jesus, who alone could say, “He that hath seen me hath seen the Father” (John 14:9).

What you will discover when you look at Christ as revealed in the pages of the Gospels? You will discover not only that God is real, but also that he loves you and wants you to be part of your family forever. Do not go in a cloud of disbelief any longer, but by faith turn to Christ and open your heart and life to its transforming power.
