Bill Weir ABC Health, A routine assignment turns into a life saving one for Nightline anchor Bill Weir. And now he’s using what he found out about his own health to help other men be more aware about their own well being.
It was an assignment pretty much like any other. Bill Weir was sent to California to interview Dr David Agus, the author of the new book, The End of Illness. Dr Agus treated Ted Kennedy, Lance Armstrong and Steve Jobs. His book is being called the holy grail of medicine: ending illness. Weir says, “Not by just treating disease, but preventing it in the first place. We’re waiting for medical cures. Instead, let’s try not to get sick in the first place. We have enough tools if we just live smarter and end illness before it ever sets in.”
Bill told me in an exclusive interview on Tuesday, that at first, it was just another assignment for him. He said of the assignment, “He took me to the lab of the future and showed me all these amazing CT scan machines and DNA tests and he had me go through them just as sort of a narrative device, right. I didn’t really think it would find anything. I thought it was interesting and it was all very fun, it was just another story, until the moment he said you have heart disease.”
A calcification in his heart that gone unchecked, could have killed him within five years. Weir adds, “The first thing that flashed into my mind was my eight year old daughter, sort of on the same spot where I sprinkled my Dad’s ashes, realizing she’s never been to a funeral. I could have been the first one.”
His second thought, it was his own fault. That he ignored his own health, that doctors were for sick people and he doesn’t get sick. He doesn’t think that anyone and says other men should be proactive with their health. Weir says, “The more guys get on board and realize, man, if you put as much effort into knowing your body the way you know your fantasy football team or your stock portfolio of anything like that, you could be playing with those kids a lot longer.”
