Bieber & Gomez, (CP) – There is no doubt that Justin Bieber is everywhere. Best Buy of the last Super Bowl with Ozzy Osbourne in the film “Justin Bieber: Never Say Never” singles online, on air and everywhere else, the so-called Beliebers raised the broom on top of Canada to dizzying heights of stardom.
Now he is preparing to return to Earth: longtime public face of MAD magazine, Alfred E. Neuman – with its big ears and goofy smile – sports Bieberesque a bowl of hair on the cover of the February 16 issue. Titles: Justin Bieber. “HAIR STUPID!” HIS BOOK”DUMB! His film”terrible! “”THE MUSIC terrible!”
Bieber has already been on the cover of Vanity Fair, certainly not easy to achieve.
“It’s probably the highlight of his career and be on the cover of MAD is the low light,” John Ficarra, Editor of MAD, said with a laugh, just maybe, a grunt.
But it can also be another step in the saturation of the singer of all things media and, of course, make the cover of the magazine that was published along pushing humor, pathos and Alfred E. Neuman for nearly six decades is certainly not negligible.
Ficarra said it was logical to put the 16-year singer on the cover of issue No. 508, and then mock him playful satire in the pages, too.
“We like what we call the Zeitgeist covers. When we saw that his film was debuted at about the same time, we would be coming with the question, “everything fell into place, Ficarra said.” We knew it would be in every way. ”
The question is linked to a bestseller with Bieber on the cover, Ficarra said.
“He’ll hate it and buy all the copies, he said,” and it will be a betrayal. Or, conversely, Bieber will not even notice and “we’ll probably sell three copies of the issue.”
Regardless, Ficarra said the magazine, published by DC Comics, is ready for the onslaught of reaction Beliebers named Bieber – fans who buy his CDs, downloading his singles and shout for joy at every aspect.
“Every time we put one of these young stars of the teens on the cover – it goes back to New Kids on the Block – we get a ton of mail from prepubescent girls,” he said. “The strange thing is I was looking through old issues and we did a story about Elvis, too.”
At the time, the magazine was flooded with letters from Elvis fans decrying satire. “So that must be wired into the DNA of prepubescent girls. When someone attacks, they do the same,” he said.
As for the reaction Bieber coverage, it did not immediately respond to requests by email to the Associated Press for comment.
The move to have coverage Bieber is part of the efforts of MAD to stay contemporary in a rapidly changing world where humor and satire abounds on YouTube, the Onion, “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart” and elsewhere.
Ficarra has been editor since 1984 and said the biggest changes that have taken place have been the decision to advertise and publish every two months. Although the magazine took heat for taking ads, Ficarra said she allowed him to be published in color throughout the issue.
“The magazine has changed a bit. We ad, which was a compromise for color,” Ficarra said the magazine was published in 1952 by Entertaining Comics. “Of course, humor has been tilted up as the company was tilted upward. MAD reflects only the signs of the times.”
But the old standards remain just that, too, including brands cartoonist Al Jaffee fold-ins on.
“Al still does creases for us,” Ficarra said, stressing the cartoonist of his 90 years. “We’re on a plan to get him as many birthday cards as we can. I would like to find $ 5 million or 10 million dollars and he is a man he will probably feel compelled to respond to each of them! ”
For the future, Ficarra said the magazine has no shortage of subjects ripe for ridicule on. “It’sa great moment because it is so good whack job for us to go after,” he said. “The extremists are alive and well from right to left. There is never a shortage of material.”
