Belgium Stage Collapse, Witness: “People were screaming and running … the poles were gone mainstream media only” At least two people have died in the music festival Pukkelpop in Belgium after a sudden storm did two stages of collapse, reports say.
Television pictures of the scene, about 65 km (40 miles) east of Brussels, was dropped rigging stage and people struggling to cover. The first Belgian media reports said four people were killed.
About 60,000 people are believed to be at the event, one of the largest outdoor festivals in Europe. The mayor of the city of Hasselt, Pukkelpop which takes place, said 40 people were injured, reported AP news agency.
Television footage showed rain-soaked festivalgoers reinforcement of the strong winds. Sagging porches and rigging could be seen on the ground.
Belgian media reported that trees were uprooted by the storm and crashed on stage, bringing it down.
Some festivalgoers said in the Twitter website that a tornado had been beaten.
The BBC’s Matthew, Cole, in Brussels, said the storm swept through Belgium in the afternoon, turning the dark sky.
Five people died last week at a festival in the U.S. the state of Indiana, when a stage collapsed in high winds.
