Austin Marathon

Austin Marathon, (KXAN) – The 2011 LIVESTRONG Austin Marathon and Half Marathon is underway in downtown Austin this Sunday.As Racers make their way to the finish line drivers in the Austin area are several closures roads, including the Congress Avenue near Capitol.The the first winner of Sunday’s race, Karen Killeen, “said KXAN Austin News is his first race in six years. “Honestly, I went out today just to see who I was. Just happy to be in the new environment. Just to test my fitness. “Killeen ran the 3-mile portion of the Women 5k in 18 minutes.

Today is the Austin Marathon, which brings road closures that could affect travel through the center of Austin. The Statesman has a good map of the route and closures. The 2011 Austin Marathon and Half Marathon are now underway. It is in its 20th year and organizing a field provided more than 20,000 runners, the highest in the history of racing.

The race started at 7 pm at Congress Avenue and 16th Street. For the post-race entertainment, over 30 local bands play Austin along the way, with El Tule headliner.

Road closures began at 3:00 am near the starting line; the route will be closed to motor vehicles by 6:45 for the 7:00 departure. Roads will reopen on a timetable for implementation of the follow the last runner. Please plan ahead and be aware of the closure in your area.

The approximate time of finish for the winners of each event:

! 07:45 – 5K male winner

! 7:48 – 5K women’s winner

! 8:05 pm – Half-marathon men earning

! 08.15 – Half-marathon female winner

! 09:15 – Marathon winner male

! 09:40 – Women’s Marathon Winner

! 10:30 – Awards Ceremony Begins (Main Stage, located at Fifth and Congress)

! 14:00 – Course closes
