Appalachian State University, Boone, NC – December 2010 – In what is surely one of the most anticipated games of the NCAA Division I football history, seeded Appalachian State University (ASU) will host the national champions in Villanova in the quarterfinals this year Saturday at noon at Kidd Brewer Stadium. The game will be televised nationally on ESPN.
Appalachian (10-2) advanced to the quarterfinals by routing Western Illinois 42-14 Saturday in the snow at Kidd Brewer Stadium. No. 10 Villanova (8-4) overcame a 10 point deficit early in an impressive away victory 54-24 over Stephen F. Austin on the road Saturday.
The showdown between the quarter-final winners of four championships in NCAA Division I national football last five, as ASU has requested an unprecedented three consecutive titles from 2005-07 FCS and Villanova won its first title National last year. However, while the Mountaineers marched to the championship No. 1 seed with a regular season 9-2, the Wildcats needed a victory in overtime at the time, top-ranked Delaware, the last day of the regular season to clinch a place in the 20 – team field in the playoffs.
The game also features two of the most dynamic players in the nation’s Appalachian quart DeAndre Presley and Villanova wide receiver / running back / returner Matt Szczur. Both had spectacular performances in wins second round of their team amassing 311 yards with Presley attack total (including a career-high 264 on the ground) and accounting for three touchdowns in the victory of ASU caught on WIU Szczur and 11 assists for 128 yards and running nine times for 68 yards in victory at Villanova SFA. Szczur return to the lineup was a major element in the resurgence of Villanova at the end of the season as he missed six games in the final stages of the regular season with an ankle injury.
