Angola Leila LopesAngola Leila Lopes, Leila Lopes Miss Angola was named Miss Universe 2011 at the 60th annual ceremony in Brazil. The 25-year-old Benguela became the first winner of her country to receive the honor when she was crowned at the Credicard Hall in Sao Paulo on Monday night.

Lopes beat competition from 88 other participants during the event, which aired on NBC and Telemundo worldwide. She told the AP after her victory he hopes to continue the work he does in her home country.

“I’ve worked with several social causes. I work with poor children, I work in the fight against HIV,” he said. “I work to protect the elderly and I have to do whatever my country needs. I think now as Miss Universe, I will be able to do more.”

Prizes include a custom tiara of diamonds and jewelry, a year’s supply of hair products and tools, a shoe wardrobe, wardrobe nightwear, year supply of products for nail care, suncare, a scholarship the film a year and the home of the New York Film Academy, and a luxury apartment in New York, while she serves as Miss Universe.

Contestants had to compete in three categories – swimsuit, evening gown and personality interview – on the front panel of judges that included Indy 500 racer Helio Castroneves, Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star Adrienne Maloof actress Vivica Fox and broadcaster Connie Chung.

Lopes was crowned by her predecessor Ximena Navarrete, who picked up the title at the ceremony in Las Vegas last year.

Miss Ukraine Olesia Stefanko was named first runner-up and face the rights of Miss Universe if Lopes is unable to fulfill them. Miss Brazil Priscilla Machado was named second runner up.

Miss Universe was hosted by Andy Cohen and NBC Bravo Natalie Morales.
