Andy Whitfield CancerAndy Whitfield Cancer, Starz on Sunday issued a statement in reaction to the tragic news that former Andy Whitfield Spartacus had succumbed to cancer.

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of our dear friend and colleague, Andy Whitfield,” said President and CEO Chris Albrecht Starz. “We were fortunate to have worked with Andy in Spartacus and came to know that the man who played a champion in the screen was also champion in his own life. Andy was an inspiration to us all when faced with this very personal, with courage, strength and grace. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time. He lives in the hearts of his family, friends and fans. ”

Spartacus Whitfield co-star Lucy Lawless is also a tribute paid to him in a statement to Entertainment Weekly: “Obviously, Andy Whitfield left an indelible mark on us all in the family Spartacus. It was a kind man who never said a bad word about anyone, a talented photographer, engineer (not really!) and a brilliant actor. Presence incandescent film Andy has made men want to be him and women want to marry him. Two babies Andy will always know that his dad loved them and their mother , Vashti, above all things.’s lucky to have had the grace to life. Good luck, Andy! ”

The actor of 39 years died of non-Hodgkin lymphoma in Sydney, Australia. The native of Wales, was diagnosed 18 months ago while preparing for the second season of Spartacus. Although it was a relatively unknown when the show started, Whitfield’s performance was so strong and iconic that the production of the second season was stopped about a year in an attempt to Whitfield time to recover from the disease. During that time, the producers throw a prequel series called Gods of the Arena without the actor.
