American Idiot: Green Day

American Idiot, American Idiot by Green Day has already achieved cult status as an album and a Broadway musical of the same name and now looks like it could hit the big screen as well as a new Universal agreement has been revealed.

According to reports from Universal is currently conducting negotiations for the screen rights to American Idiot and has hired the director of theater production, Michael Mayer, to shoot the film version.

Other big names, said to participate in the project include Oscar winner Dustin Lance Black, writer of milk, while Tom Hanks is said to be on board as producer along with the three members of Green Day.

The album deals with the concept of love taking into anger with the disc by following the paths of three characters, Jesus of Suburbia, a man without direction, a fighter for the freedom of punk rock known as St. Jimmy and Whatsername third character.

American Idiot album was originally released in 2004 and caused a bit of his return to the punk rock trio and quickly became one of the best selling and most popular album of the band to pick up numerous awards upon its release.

It has been reported that Universal has been in search of a new musical following the success of Mamma Mia based on ABBA’s greatest hits.
